Western societies claim that gender comes from physiology, however, gender and sex are not equivalent. Lorber then goes into speaking of tertiary sex characteristics in which people display of their learned gender as a way to distinguish people as genitalia are the only sex markers. People are not born gendered, they are however taught masculine and feminine. Gender is learned at several places such as school, home, peers, media and society. This is justified by institutions such as religion and are also supported by laws.

It does not even matter what men and women actually do, it is only what they do being perceived as different. Gender is apart of the social structure that is built on unequal statuses. People learn what is expected of them as their defined gender through social interactions.

People either act as their defined gender or they resist and rebel, and even these efforts have not changed gendered norms or weakened the statuses. Expectations and norms of gender are also reinforced through interactions where an individual is punished for following gender norms. Organizations and institutions also reinforce gender roles and because gender is actually a process there is room for institutionalized change.
